Ready For A Hip New Trend?

Yesterday at The Rotary Club of Fresno we had a very informative and very entertaining speaker named Michael Yoshikami.  Yoshikami attended Fresno City College and Fresno State and became an expert on managing money.   He is the President & chief investment strategist of YCMNET Advisers, Inc. and you can read about him here.  Anyway, he was our speaker yesterday and he spoke on the 2010 economic forecast.  Michael is a guy who is way smarter than I will ever be but he delivered his presentation in a truthful, yet engaging way.  He was also witty and clever as well.

Possibly one of my favorite lines of his presentation was when he spoke about a “new trend that is spreading across the nation called buying what you can afford.”  The trend seems to be catching on. Even in my own house.  This is a real problem in America and we have all been tempted in this area but never in my lifetime has the discipline of sticking to a budget and living within our means been more important.

My cousin Forrest posted a SNL video that I had seen a while ago but forgotten about that is pretty funny on my Facebook page.  It is rare that anything form SNL makes me laugh these days but this video featuring Steve Martin was perfect with the message from Rotary yesterday.   I have included the video below.

I specifically think our state and federal governments should consider investing in the book.

Oh boy, we’re following that trend more and more too. The sad things is that even though we’re starting to spend within our family budget, our budget is still really shrinking.

Some of us have known about this theory all along, and live it everyday. It is a novel concept, but people should not spend beyond their means. You must provide for your family, and that includes creating a “rainy day” fund. To understand true work ethic and living within one's means, one only has to meet someone who is 65+ to find true examples.
